Mimochai at Steep LA

FEATURED PROJECTS

In my work, I’m interested in connecting with heritage in a modern way. It is always special to partner with other organizations that share similar values.

Steep is a beautiful modern teahouse in Los Angeles serving high quality, hand-picked tea from China and Taiwan. I really appreciate the way that they not only create a space for enjoying and learning about tea culture, but also that they are promoting slow living. This mindful approach is reflected everywhere from the peaceful design of their space to the simple menu.

In 2024, I helped Steep curate a selection of three framed art canvases for their tearoom: Flow, Lotus, & Cranes (pictured above and below on display at Steep). These pieces from my Nature Spirit series honor the traditional concept of 天人合一 (tian ren he yi), the unity between humans, nature, and spirit. I also explored the heritage of using symbols in Chinese art.

Currently, you can enjoy some tea and view the pieces in-person (more details below).

About the Art

  • Flow

Inspired by traditional ink painting, fish are symbols of prosperity and happiness as the word for fish sounds like the word for abundance in Chinese culture. Here, happiness and prosperity move together in harmony by finding flow in the stream of life.

  • Lotus

In many cultures, the lotus flower is a symbol of purity, enlightenment, and rebirth. In Buddhist tradition, it is associated with spiritual awakening and the journey towards self-realization. A touch of goldfish, which represent good luck and prosperity, completes the scene.

  • Cranes

    • In Chinese and Japanese culture, red-crowned cranes symbolize grace, longevity, loyalty, and love. While a pair of cranes typically represent the love between two people, this piece also uses the symbol to represent the universal love that connects all of us.
