Hello/Goodbye: Best of Submissions!

Hello/Goodbye: Best of Submissions!

April 20, 2016 0 Comments

Thanks to everyone who submitted for the giveaway! In case you missed it, I hosted a giveaway on Instagram last week with two ways to enter. Over 200 of you told me something funny and almost 400 of you answered my little questionnaire... amazing! Here's a quick summary and some extras :)

HELLO Pack (L) and GOODBYE Pack (R) Giveaways!

Winner & Very Close Winners

It was actually really hard to pick a favorite, but ultimately a pun-filled tale of loaf was the breadwinner (I'm trying really hard to make puns here, guys). This comment encompassed everything: jokes, puns, effort, and a true personal story (according to the author!).

Here is the winning comment and runner ups:

  • @lavishingly: "True story. I thought it would be funny to be a piece of bread on a dating app called tinder. I made loafs of puns and I was a rye-iot. Little did I know I would meet a man whom I would date for 6 months. He was a different kind of man, almost purebread. But alas our relationship went stale and it crumbled into oblivion. He was someone who made me happy and it was pun-filled. I was introduced to all his friends as bread and still to this day I'm bread to his friends. We have moved on nonetheless and we have separated like sliced bread."
  • @henriejohns: "When I was little I told my dad I was feeling really cold, so he told me to stand in the corner. I was upset because I thought he was punishing me- so I asked why he'd sent me to the corner. He replied, "because it's 90 degrees." [MC note: Omg this dad! I hope to torment and infuriate my children with cryptic puns in the future.]
  • @ethantii: "I am a trash can, not a trash cannot." [MC note: WHY DO I FIND THIS SO FUNNY, WHY.]
  • @_moooshell: "I was eating tater tots this one time. I accidentally dropped it down my shirt as I was putting it into my mouth. I looked down and whispered to myself... "Titty tots." [MC note: My immature side thought this was just soo hilarious (I also read it while we were at a bar, so maybe it seemed very appropriate. And we actually had tater tots haha.)]

More honorable mentions:

  • @shanice.duong: "I was going to tell a sodium and hydrogen pun. But NaH." [MC note: There were a lot of chemistry jokes!]
  • @ttran_: " I bought shoes from a drug dealer. I don't know what he laced them with, but I've been tripping all day."
  • @starringmichelle: "Today I was cooking a hawaiian pizza and I burned it :-/ I guess I need to use aloha setting."
  • @quiniequan: "A man walks into a zoo, the only animal in there was a dog, the man says, "it's a shih tzu."
  • @shanaynigan: "Gandhi walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him a super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis." [MC note: J said he's heard this before but it was new to me so I found it rather clever!]
  • @turtlewayne: "I draw turtles." [MC note: yes I'm totally biased here!]

About the Packs

This was a "thank you" giveaway, so I wanted to make the packs special and meaningful. The styluses represent digital/technology while the pencils represent analog/traditional, both are important to me. They echo the theme of the Hello/Goodbye drawings, as representing two sides that are seemingly conflicting but actually complementary. Here's a little bit more about each item.

  • Palomino Blackwing Pencils: I've been eyeing these beautiful pencils forever and finally purchased a pack for this giveaway. They're not cheap! But they are really nice. They're made with smooth Japanese graphic, genuine Califonia incense cedar and have a cool replaceable eraser design. Purchases also benefit music and arts in schools. I love how they draw. I wanted to pass it on to someone else, hopefully it will encourage them to draw more too. Quality over quantity.

  • Styluses—A Review Preview: I want to do a fuller stylus review post, but these were Adonits I purchased over the last year or so. I like reading up on art tech and spent a lot of time deciding on these. My brother got me the Apple Pencil recently and I felt I had too many styluses not being fully utilized. So I wanted to pass these one to someone who could make good use of them! Up until the Pencil, my favorite stylus was the Adonit Touch (it retails for $100, so it better be pretty good!).
  • Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset
  • The Hello/Goodbye Totes: These were a pair of line drawing/designs I made for myself recently. It's about seeing things from different sides, and the unexpected things you might uncover. I am considering putting the designs on something for the store, but the totes are one of a kind.

Thoughts on Survey Responses

I really expected more people to comment something than to do the survey because I thought the former required less effort. So I'm really grateful for all the survey responses! I wanted to learn more about everyone and what they like, what they're about. It was helpful to see your responses as I plan for future site updates. Also, many of you left me notes that were so sweet. Thank you, I truly appreciate them.

A Drawing For You

It was really cool to read your one-sentence descriptions, and I would say a lot of you shared some common interests! I wanted to make an IG post thanking you for your time, so I tried to touch upon as many as I could in the drawing above: dogs (corgis!), cats, traveling, dreaming, food, reading, music, cute drawings ;)

There were also some common threads of dealing with adulting/growing up, and I just want to say we're all just doing our best. No one truly has it figured out. As you get older, you realize even your parents are/were just people like you, trying to figure everything out. I think if you can learn to both listen and communicate with an open heart and open mind, that's already more adulting that many adults have been able to achieve.

Thank you guys, very much.

Square Thanks
